What is your most vivid memory of the kitchen in your childhood? Standing at the stove for what seemed like hours with my arms getting sore from stirring “real” gravy any time we had a large family dinner involving roast meat. In reality it was probably about 10 or 15 minutes at a time but I was not only getting sore arms from being on this duty, I felt almost banished to the corner while the adults bustled behind me to finalise the other dinner preparations.
As a child, who was your favorite relative? My uncle David. We lived several hours drive apart when I was growing up so we didn’t see each other all that often but I remember always looking forward to enjoyable visits. Last year we caught up when we both happened to be holidaying in Paris at the same time.
What did you or did not like about the first apartment you ever rented? We lived on a main road so I liked that it was at the back of the apartment block away from the road noise. I grew to not like the stairs, mainly because they were so painful to vacuum.
What kind of TV commercial would you like to make? Describe it. I would make a TV commercial about kindness and generosity towards fellow human beings. This is probably not an original idea but it would be full of imagery of people helping each other or being kind in some way like people dressed in suits looking important and on their way to a meeting but still having time to smile at strangers and say hello to locals. Perhaps someone helping an old lady with her shopping bags, teenagers helping children to cross a busy road, walkers in a park stopping to help someone who has lost something – all that ‘pay-it-forward’ sort of stuff. The backing music would be very upbeat but I don’t think there would be any words to it or even a voice-over, just a visual message at the end with a reminder that we are all in this together and to be kind to one another. Or something like that.
Bonus question: What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up? I’m grateful for an excellent meal and an enjoyable evening out with my work colleagues. I’m looking forward to a girls weekend away next weekend.
