Small Stones #23: Aquí?

London map

The bus rounds the corner, making the river visible for the first time along this route. ‘Aquí?’ says the tourist hopefully as he shuffles across the aisle. I take a moment to study the map he was unfolding seconds earlier, whilst trying to remember if this Spanish word means ‘here’ or ‘there’. Either way it doesn’t matter because it isn’t. ‘No, aquí’ I gesture into space, past ads at the edge of the map, wondering how he got here, nowhere near his destination. I try to think of words to ask where he got on, perhaps he was given very poor directions or simply didn’t understand. But he is gone in a flash, flying for the doors to alight as soon as possible.jan13large
