Seasonal Creativity

So, I notice that I haven’t written a blog for a while. It’s not that I no longer love my blog, I do, but I haven’t felt like I’ve had anything to say. And now I do.

I think my creativity was sapped by the cold, winter months but now that we have had a couple of weeks of sunshine I’m suddenly feeling the urge to write again.

I know that I’ve previously written about how much I love the Autumn and the beginning of the cooler weather. Also about how I thought I would cope much better with 24 hours of being in the dark over light, which I still think is true from the point of view of routine and getting through the day. However, clearly I have been affected by the lack of light in other ways.

Apparently I’m not the only one who has noticed a decrease in creativity during the winter. Since finishing university I no longer have access to the medical and scientific journal databases but Google has kindly found this interesting abstract in which Italian writers report seasonal changes in creativity.

Do the seasons have any affect on you?

  1. The seasons definitively affect me, I hate Feb and normally March, but this year the sun has been out and my creativity has been sparked. Thanks for following my blog.

    • Thanks so much for following back. I’m looking forward to exploring more on your blog, particularly some hints on using GIMP which I keep opening and then feel completely overwhelmed by, and close again.
I hadn’t considered the effects of the seasons on my creativity until I noticed that I hadn’t written blog during Feb or March and the creativity resparked with the early spring.

  2. My theory is that our creativity appears to disappear at times but it’s actually gone into hibernation, an important stage where we’re able to regroup and refuel so that when spring (real or metaphorical) comes around, we have stuff to draw from. It seems to me we live in a world where productivity is portrayed as the be all and end all, but in nature, every thing is cyclical, including creativity. That’s my two cents’ worth anyway!

    Cheers,
    Marianne
